Pentagon tells armed civilians at military centres to stand down

(MENAFN- Jordan News Agency) The U.S. defence department has called on the groups of armed citizens who have sprung up to patrol outside military recruitment centres to stand down.

Armed citizens have guarded recruiting centers around the country after last Thursday's shootings in Chattanooga, Tennessee (south) that claimed the lives of four Marines and one Navy sailor.

"While we greatly appreciate the outpouring of support for our recruiters from the American public, we ask that individuals not stand guard at recruiting offices as it could adversely impact our mission, and potentially create unintended security risks," Pentagon Press Secretary Peter Cook said.

In Lancaster, Ohio, a volunteer's AR-15 rifle accidentally fired Thursday, while he was attempting to clear ammunition from the gun.
