Fireworks could lead to loss of sight experts warn
(MENAFN- Arab News) JEDDAH: Acquiring fireworks is a difficult task requiring one to follow sellers through narrow and dark alleys away from the eyes of the police.
Yet getting caught by authorities is not the only risk associated with these products.
Experts like Dr. Badr Zaqzouk point to the extensive damage these fireworks can cause to the eyes and other body parts as the rays and ashes can cause direct damage to the retina.
According to Dr. Ahmad Al-Zahrani the joys of Eid often turns to sorrow for some families due to extensive injuries brought about by these fireworks causing many children to lose their eyesight all together.
The seriousness of the issue has prompted law enforcement agencies to intensify efforts to stop the sale and use of fireworks mostly sold in popular neighborhoods and markets. Security authorities have increased inspections and monitoring of these sites especially during holiday seasons.
Many have called for greater monitoring of how these items enter the market especially as they are not manufactured locally. Parents must do more to monitor their children who may not be aware of the dangers of fireworks.
With Eid Al-Adha approaching security efforts will need to intensify further combined with awareness campaigns by media and humanitarian organizations about the consequences of fireworks.
