Russian Lawmaker Proposes Agency Against Foreign Lawsuits

(MENAFN- QNA) A top Russian lawmaker Thursday proposed setting up a state agency to manage risks of lawsuits filed by international creditors against the country.

Federation Council’s Committee on Constitutional Legislation and Civil Society Development Deputy Chairman Konstantin Dobrynin has sent a proposal to Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev, a TASS news agency report says.

There is a 'threat of significant damage to Russia' from western plaintiffs and foreign law enforcement agencies, his proposal says, and calls for 'taking appropriate decisions as soon as possible'.

Further miscalculations in this sphere can result not only in significant damage, but also to undermining Russia’s financial sovereignty, Dobrynin stresses in his proposal.

In his letter he urges Medvedev to analyse "mistakes and blanks that led to a possibility, hypothetical for now, but very real in the nearest future of arresting Russian assets abroad of more than $50 billion." Last year the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) ruled that former Yukos shareholders are entitled to 1.866 Billion euros in compensation following their complaint against Russia issued in 2011.
