(MENAFN- The Peninsula) Qatar's phase 11 power transmission expansion project got a boost yesterday with the Qatar General Electricity & Water Corporation (Kahramaa) awarding a contract for three substations to Siemens.
Siemens will supply three 132/11kV substations as part of the Phase 11 of the power transmission expansion project. In addition to the turnkey construction of three substations, Siemens has won a separate contract for air-insulated switchgears too.
The first substation, Al Wukair-1, will be located inside Al Wakra Stadium Boulevard, approximately 10km from Doha. The second, Al Heedan, will be at the proposed Al Khor Stadium and the third, Learaig, is to be constructed at Salwa Beach Resort near Qatar's border with Saudi Arabia.
The substations will provide a power supply for residential, commercial and industrial applications in Qatar, including two new sports stadiums, and are planned for completion within 15 months.

Each of the turnkey 132kV substations comprises Siemens 8DN8 132kV gas-insulated switchgear, four 40MVA power transformers, two boards of 11kV switchgears, station auxiliary transformers, complete protection and substation control system, associated LV, power and control cables and high-voltage cable diversion works.
Siemen's additional contract by Kahramaa for 654 NX Air 11kV air-insulated switchgears is inclusive of protection for secondary distribution for greater reliability and stability of Qatar's electricity network. The Siemens switchgears will be implemented over a two-year period.
The Qatar Power Transmission System Expansion project has been devised to meet the growing demand for electricity, as the country continues to witness rapid development. Kahramaa's expansion projects aim to ensure a stable power supply to all sectors, including households, business centres, shopping malls, hospitals and schools throughout Doha and its suburbs.
Kahramaa signed a slew of electricity networks expansion project contracts with a number of local and international companies for Phase 11-Qatar Power Transmission System Expansion Plan, in May 2014.
The contracts of 1st stage of phase 11 will facilitate commissioning of total 32 substations comprising 26 main substations and six Framework substations. Apart from it, total 948.6 KM (main and framework) cables will be laid and 43KM of OHLs (overhead lines) will be dismantled.
The contracts of second stage of phase 11 will facilitate commissioning of total 20 substations comprising 14 main substations and six Framework substations. Apart from it, total 82.1KM (main and framework) cables will be laid and 54.5KM of OHLs will be dismantled.
