Tokyo to consider G7 stance in Japan's military cooperation with Russia


(MENAFN- The Journal Of Turkish Weekly) The new edition of the Japanese defense strategy described Russia as an "important neighbor," and emphasizes the need to boost Japanese-Russian military exchanges and deepen cooperation.Russia is a major power that can promote security in Europe, Central Asia and the Asia Pacific Region, the Defense Ministry's annual report said, adding that Tokyo's military contact with Russia will be regarded in light of the G7 stance on the Ukrainian crisis.

At the same time, the ministry said it was important to maintain working contacts with Moscow to avoid tensions in the region.

Other partners for the Japanese military are South Korea, Australia, India, China, as well as its post-World War II ally Washington.

Relations between Russia and Japan have been strained following the start of the Ukrainian crisis, when Tokyo sided with Washington to put pressure on Moscow over its alleged role in Ukrainian hostilities, while the Kremlin has repeatedly denied the groundless accusations.Japan is part of the so-called G7 club of developed economies, including the United States, Germany, France, Britain, Canada, and Italy. Russia has left the club following disagreements over differing perceptions of the cause of the Ukrainian conflict.
