Qatar- Indian embassy 'pursuing' arrested fishermen's case

(MENAFN- Gulf Times) The case of 7 Indian fishermen from Bahrain, who were taken into custody earlier this month by Qatari Coastguards for straying into this country's territorial waters, is being pursued by the Indian embassy.

When contacted, a senior Indian embassy official said yesterday the mission is doing whatever possible to secure the release of the seven members even while the litigation process is on.

It is understood that the seven Indian fishermen from Bahrain were taken into custody on July 5 while they were reportedly fishing inside Qatar's waters.

According to a communique of Tamil Nadu Fishermen Development Trust, a forum representing fishermen from India, six of the detainees came from Kanyakumari district of Tamil Nadu while the seventh was from Kerala.

It said a primary court has slapped a fine of QR30,000 on the group members.

The detained fishermen are Soosai Raviston (38), Praveen Atnony Adimai (34), Sujin Sasaiya (22), Abel Valan (31), Anish Kuttan Pushparaj, Suresh Varghese (34) and Vinith Baskar (25).

The arrested fishermen, said the forum, would be produced before a Prosecutors Court on August 3.
