Qatar denies links with US shooter

(MENAFN- The Peninsula) Qatar has denied any links with the man suspected of killing five members of the US military in Tennessee last week.

"We are aware of reports linking the suspect of the recent tragedy in Tennessee to Qatar," the Government Communications Office said in a statement yesterday.

"The man identified as Mohammod Youssuf Abdulazeez transited through Hamad International Airport from Amman, Jordan, to the US in November 2014," the office said.

"At no time did Mr Abdulazeez enter Qatar. Statements suggesting he entered the country are false."

The office said Qatar condemns such criminal as those in Tennessee, that terrorise and kill innocent people.

These acts are contrary to humanitarian values, ethics, principles and religions, the statement said, stressing the need for unity and solidarity to renounce violence and reject terrorism in all its forms and manifestations whatever its motives and causes.

Qatar wishes to express sincere condolences to the US government, people and the bereaved families, the office added.

Abdulazeez, a Kuwaiti-born naturalised US citizen, was killed in a gunfight with police after he sprayed gunfire at a military recruiting centre in Chattanooga, then drove to a nearby Naval Reserve Centre where he shot and killed four Marines.

Three people were wounded, including a sailor who later succumbed to injuries.
