Italy migration chief: Migrant arrivals stable from last year

(MENAFN- Saudi Press Agency) The sea migrant influx to Italy is stabilizing, the country's top migration official said in a parliamentary hearing on
Tuesday, according to dpa.

Last year, 170,100 people landed on Italian shores from the
Mediterranean. Authorities were expecting the number to rise over
200,000 this year.

'As of July 21, we had a number of arrivals roughly similar to last
year, we are talking of 85,361 persons,' Prefect Mario Morcone, head
of the migration department in the Interior Ministry, said in the
Chamber of Deputies.

'The trend will perhaps allow us to stay below our national
contingency planning, which we had drawn up fearing that we would go
over 200,000 persons. Instead, the trend seems to be in line with
last year's,' he added.
