Traffic Accidents in India Rise 1.3% in 2014


(MENAFN- QNA) Traffic accidents in India increased 1.3% in 2014 compared to 2013, the latest annual report released by the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) says.

The comprehensive data on road accidents is first release of the records bureau, part of India's federal Home Affairs (Interior) Ministry.

The country's central state of Madhya Pradesh recorded the highest increase from 35,878 accidents in 2013 to 41,747 in 2014.

The year recorded 481,805 accidents, including 169,107 fatal and injuring 481,739 people.

The 481,805 accidents comprise 450,898 road mishaps, 28,360 railway accidents and 2,547 railway crossing accidents. These accidents caused 141,526, 25,006 and 2,575 deaths respectively in 2014.

States of Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra and Tamil Nadu reported maximum fatalities. Their combined percentage adds up to 33.3% of all accident deaths reported in India.

India's road network exceeds 4,865,394 kms as on March 1, 2012. It contributes 4.8% to the country's Gross Domestic Product (GDP).
