Team from Oman finishes ninth in King of Fighters gaming tournament

(MENAFN- Muscat Daily) From among 71 contestants from  six countries Oman's team finished ninth at the second King of Fighters GCC (KOF) eSports Tournament held in Doha recently.

The top three positions were all taken by teams from UAE.

The contest brings gamers to compete under one roof. This year contestants competed in The King of Fighters XIII Guilty Gear Xrd and Super Smash Bros.

Sultan Khalfan a gamer from Oman said 'These are person-to-person games and one needs to have skills and speed to be able to win. It feels great to finish ninth.'

Khalfan said the history of KOF is quite interesting.

'We started a WhatsApp group of like-minded gamers from the Gulf. Slowly the group grew in size and we decided to have a low-key event in Muscat. Despite it being a hush-hush event the response was massive and sponsors showed interest.  Hence we decided to make KOG a thrice-in-a-year event. In Muscat we had only 30 contestants; the number more than doubled for the Doha event.'

The next edition will be in Dubai in December.

'The team is all geared up. We plan to have our stations and fight one another in a prominent mall of the city. We take lessons online to take our skills to an advanced level.'

Khalfan added that competition is stiff. 'Our opponents played big tournaments in France Korea and the US and hence have way much more experience than us. But our  team is equally talented and passionate about gaming.'

The Oman team finishing ninth is a big improvement going by its past record. 'At the Muscat edition we finished last' said Khalfan.

'People have a misconception about gaming. They feel it's a waste of time. But its better than spending hours at sheesha cafés or coffee shops doing nothing. Gaming helps one to focus and plan. Besides it gives a great sense of accomplishment' he said.
