Uncalled for fatwa

(MENAFN- Arab News) This refers to the news report 'Friday prayer on day of Eid to pray or not to pray.' (July 18)

When a society has its bad days the scholars are the first ones who reveal the signs of decay. The debate whether we say Jumah prayers on an Eid is uncalled for and misleading.

In fact there's no need for it unless and until all the scholars are unanimous on the issue. But we are treated with different fatwas on the issue and hence it becomes more confusing and does not give any clear stand on the issue.

Firstly this is not for the first time that Eid was on a Friday. Then why the debate this time?

Quoting some Hadith on the issue is also not appropriate. Because it hardly matters in modern times whether one lives in remote areas or remotest areas. We may find a Jumah masjid in almost every nook and corner of a Muslim country.

Also during the Prophet's times there was no proper arrangement for easy transportation to Masjide Nabavi from a remote/rural area and it was not possible for people to perform both Eid and Jumah prayers in a single day.

This seems the most plausible reason why the Prophet (peace be upon him) might have advised people not to make it an obligation to perform both the prayers the same day.

I would have appreciated if the report or any fatwa had cited any instance when the Prophet (peace be upon him) himself or his companions for that matter had skipped the Jumah prayer. I don't find such saying that Prophet (peace be upon him) not prayed. I don't know if the eminent scholars had taken this too into their account.

Instead of the scholars coming out with their conflicting opinions the grand mufti should have issued a fatwa on this and set the things at rest. Allah Almighty knows well. Shamshad Hussain Riyadh
