Rao and Kawy Mahmoud clinch titles in Ramadan Cup Tennis Chionship


(MENAFN- Arab News) DAMMAM: Indian sensation Ashwin Rao took a huge step when he claimed the championship trophy in the Ramadan Cup Open Tennis Championship last Friday here

The executive employee of Yusuf Bin Kanoo Company did it the hard way in three grueling sets against title favorite Ossamah Durrani of Pakistan 6-7(4-7) 6-2 10-4 in a final that lasted 1 hour and 40 minutes.
Durrani started well in the final match racing through the opening set in a tiebreak win. However he surrendered the second set easily that gave momentum to Ashwin Rao in the third set via a super-tiebreak. Rao took control and sealed the victory after Durrani's forehand was long in the match point. They embraced each other after Rao raised his hands in jubilation.
The Ramadan Tennis Championship a two weeks tournament had an exciting game format organized by Saudi tennis player Ahmed Salem Al Sulaiteen who was also the director of the event and SAYHA's executive Mohammad Saeed Al Qahtani. The singles championship was classified from the eight-team group composed of three players. The top players on each group after a round robin classification advanced on a knockout from quarterfinals to the finals. The doubles championship was composed of 13 teams 10 teams played for the qualifying round while the winner advanced to the knockout stage.
Meanwhile in doubles championship the Egyptian duo of Mahmoud Abdel Kawy and Mokhtar Adel Mahmoud stood tall against the Filipino team of Noel and Dexter scoring a come-from-behind win 3-6 6-0 10-6.
Striking the ball with their usual consistency the taller Egyptians recovered from a slow start and won the second set at love as they finally hit their stride with some accurate ball placement. The Filipinos retaliated quick out of the blocks but their aggressive baseline game appeared to falter and lapsed into unforced errors.
SAYHA manager Ahmed Al Sharhan handed out the trophies and medals. 'We appreciate all the players and congratulations to all the winners' he said during the awarding ceremony.
