Could two top UAE clubs be tussling for Chilean Vargas?

(MENAFN- Khaleej Times) Abu Dhabi - Al Ain and Al Ahli have fought many a battle on the lush green pitches of the UAE, over the years, but they just might take that further and on to the transfer market.

As Al Ahli mull a swoop for Copa America hero Eduardo Vargas, news reports emerging from Chile said that Al Ain, who were earlier linked to the player, have agreed to a deal with the Chilean frontman.

Chile Vision said that Vargas had agreed to a deal worth ?3.5 million with 'The Boss,' while his parent club Italian side Napoli were set to get ?11 million.

The 25-year-old Vargas, who scored four goals at the Copa America which Chile won for the first time, has just completed his third loan spell.

Italian side Napoli had sent him out on loan to Brazilian club Gremio in 2013 before he was loaned out again to Spanish side Valencia the following year. He spent last season on loan with English Premiership side Queens Park Rangers.

Vargas, who joined Napoli in 2012, has a contract until 2017. His agent reportedly said Vargas didn't feature in Napoli's plans for next season. Vargas' returns at club level have been minimal.

Arabian Gulf League champions Al Ain though have completed a overhaul of their foreign quartet, with Ryan Babel, Emmanuel Emenike and Fellipe Bastos joining the retained Lee Myung Joo.

If Vargas' move is indeed true, it would be interesting to see how Al Ain deal with the situation. A loan spell, obtaining citizenship are probable options.

Recent cases have been Brazilian Jucilei da Silva, who too obtained Palestine citizenship when at Al Jazira as well as former Al Ahli man Chilean Luiz Antonio Jimenez, who obtained Palestine citizenship.

An Al Ahli move also cannot be discounted as they are in search of a striker to partner UAE international Ahmed Khalil. The Red Knights have so far retained recent Brazilian call-up Everton Ribeiro Oussama Assaidi, Ciel and Kyung-won Kwon.
