Turkey arrest 149 illegal immigrants


(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) Turkey's security forces arrested 149 illegal immigrants in the western Balikesir and Canakkale provinces while attempting to enter Europe illegally, Turkish Chief of Staff announced last night.

Turkish coast guards arrested 48 individuals, including women and children, in Ayvalik, a seaside town in Balikesir, while they were on their way towards a Greek island, Chief of Staff command said in a statement.

The arrested carried Syrian, Yemeni, Afghan, Myanmar, and Eritrean nationalities, the statement said, adding that they were taken to Cunda Island for medical checkups and security check.

Meanwhile, Turkish coast guards arrested 101 individuals off Ovacik coast of the Canakkale province while they were heading towards a Greek island illegally, it noted.

The arrested had Syrian, Afghan, and Pakistani nationalities and they were eventually taken to the expats department at the Ovacik security directorate for necessary measures.
