US lauds Colombia peace talks

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) The US late Monday said it "welcomes" the decision by the Colombian government and the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC) to reduce tensions and advance peace talks.

FARC is the largest guerrilla group in the country.
Negotiations between the two sides began in 2012 but have endured breakdowns since.

"The United States strongly supports President [Juan Manuel] Santos' leadership in seeking a negotiated settlement. We call on the FARC to redouble its efforts at the negotiating table in order to quickly demonstrate concrete progress on the remaining issues, including its commitment to justice and to effective disarmament," State Department Spokesperson John Kirby said in a statement.
