Oman- MRMWR plans to frame guidelines on use of treated wastewater

(MENAFN- Muscat Daily) The Ministry of Regional Municipalities and Water Resources (MRMWR) is planning to frame guidelines on the use of treated wastewater for agricultural and non-agricultural purposes.

An official in MRMWR said 'People have a lot of reservations regarding treated wastewater. In Oman we are using state-of-the-art technology to treat wastewater. Treated water can be used for growing crops washing cars industrial cooling and in construction. We are also planning a pilot project to demonstrate that this water is of good quality and can be used for different purposes including farming. At present farmers are reluctant to use this water because it's treated.'

He said that the ministry is collaborating with Haya Water on the reuse project.

'We are working with them to see how treated wastewater can be used to recharge our aquifers. So this will go a long way in reducing pressure on our other water resources.

'We are also working with different ministries on how to best use this treated water. We need to create awareness among people that treated water is as good as any other water.'

He said that water consumption has gone up due to rise in the country's population. 'It's a precious resource and Oman is a dry country. We have to look at every possible means to preserve water. The amount of wastewater generated is increasing and there should be more efforts to treat this water for commercial purposes.'
