Qatar- Two expats get jail for bribery, counterfeiting

(MENAFN- Gulf Times) A Doha Criminal Court has sentenced two expatriates to 10 and seven years in jail, respectively, for counterfeiting official documents and bribery, local Arabic daily Arrayah has reported.

The court has also ordered the deportation of both convicts upon completion of their prison terms.

The second convict, an employee of Hamad Medical Corporation (HMC) in charge of medical supplies, was also dismissed from his position by the court and ordered to pay a fine of QR877,000 for counterfeiting official documents and receipts. His act harmed public funds through irregularities in medical supplies estimated at around QR20mn.

The first convict, a sales representative at a pharmaceutical company,
offered the second a bribe to forge documents as well as a signature required on receipts for medical supplies, besides getting them stamped in a fraudulent manner. He paid the HMC employee QR500-2,000 on each occasion, amounting to a total of around QR8,500.

The first convict, an Egyptian expatriate, used to keep the supplies that were supposed to be delivered to HMC and sold them outside. The second convict, an Indian expatriate, provided him with forged receipts showing that the supplies entered HMC's stock in exchange for a sum of money.

The matter came to light when an audit was conducted in the supplies department and the HMC employee admitted his guilt.

The sales representative got 10 years in jail while the HMC employee got seven years.
