Qatar- Holidaymakers drive up sales of luggage, gadgets

(MENAFN- Gulf Times) The sale of luggage and electronic gadgets has seen a steady uptake from holidaymakers preparing for their vacations in time for the upcoming Eid al-Fitr celebration this weekend.

The luggage section has been one of the busiest areas of major hypermarkets in Doha as throngs of would-be vacationers scout for bargain prices from a range of international brands.

A merchandiser of a popular luggage brand said the company had experienced an increase in sales since the launching of its price drop promotion for the Ramadan season.

"Our company has timed the promotion during the holy month of Ramadan and in anticipation of the holiday plans made by citizens and expatriates, who normally take their vacations during Eid al-Fitr.

"Since the start of our promo, the company has sold an average of 20 pieces of luggage per day prompting our supplier to replenish stocks every two to three days," the merchandiser said.

As for electronics and gadgets, leading cellphone and tablet manufacturers have also seen an uptake in sales, especially during the weekends of Ramadan.

An attendant of a kiosk selling a popular cellphone said he had been able to sell at least 50 phones a day, particularly on the weekends.

Another cellphone merchandiser said there had been a high demand for almost all range of cellphones and tablets during the holy month of Ramadan due to "cash back" and discount promotions. He added that sales were expected to pick up during Eid.

"Almost all brands of electronic items have launched 'cash back' promotions or are offering discounts, which was significant in pushing our sales up, especially during Ramadan," he said.

A staff selling digital point-and-shoot cameras and popular single lens reflex (DSLR) cameras said they had continued to experience a steady increase in sales but not as high compared to customer purchases made in 2011 and 2012.

He explained that the popularity of cellphones equipped with high megapixel cameras that could produce the same high resolution as
DSLRs and other point-and-shoot cameras have affected their sales.

"Many of the major cellphone manufacturers today are trying to outdo each other in terms of producing high resolution camera phones.

"Our DSLRs and digital cameras are still in demand but since cellphone companies started manufacturing better camera phones, the competition has become very stiff. To address this, we are offering cameras at discounted prices or 'combo' packages," he added.
