Umrah fares from Riyadh hit the roof

(MENAFN- Arab News) RIYADH: The rates of Umrah packages from the capital city have skyrocketed due to a huge rush of pilgrims in the last few days of Ramadan with up to 200 percent increase for tours to Makkah and Madinah.
For instance over 100 coaches left for the two holy cities from here carrying Umrah pilgrims on a five-day package costing SR350 with accommodation in the two holy cities.
Umrah packages cost about SR90 during off season but a return fare from Riyadh to Makkah on a luxury coach including accommodation will now cost SR250 per pilgrim.
This year the peak season coincided with the summer holidays and a large number of vacationers including Saudis are performing the pilgrimage.
On an additional payment of SR100 per pilgrim stay could be upgraded to four-star hotels.
According to a spokesman from a travel operator in the city the weekend package to Makkah and Madinah starts at 4 p.m. from Riyadh on Thursday and finishes on Saturday midnight.
Each family is given a large room while the bachelors are accommodated on a sharing basis with three pilgrims in one room.
Children under 12 have to pay half the fare.
There has been no report of any accident or undue delays due to Makkah traffic congestion.
