Qatar- Court fines firm for lack of safety

(MENAFN- The Peninsula) A Criminal Court has imposed a fine of QR100,000 on a contracting company for causing injuries to two Egyptian expatriate workers due to lack of adequate safety measures at the worksite.

The Public Prosecution filed charges against the company in the court for not taking necessary safety and security measures at the work site based on a medical report on the injuries, local Arabic daily Al Raya reported yesterday.

Giving details on the incident, the daily said the police acted on a phone call from another Egyptian who informed that some people had been injured in a worksite accident in Bani Hajar.

The caller said that on that particular day he went to the site for some work and saw a wall falling. He heard the cries of people. He rushed to the spot and removed cement blocks piled up on the victims with the help of another person at the site. He added that the wind was very strong on that day.

One of the victims told the investigators that he got fractures in his hand and right leg. The company offered him QR10,000 to settle the matter amicably but he refused, said the daily.

The victims were not present in the court at the final session. Only a representative of the company attended the trial. The court found the company guilty for not complying with provisions of the labour law that requires to provide enough safety measures at worksites and issued the verdict accordingly, it added.
