Italy reiterates support to Egypt against terrorism


(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) Italy has reaffirmed support to Egypt against terrorism, urging Europe and the international community to work harder to counter the phenomenon.

Italian Prime Minister Matteo Renzi is personally following developments after a blast that caused extensive damage to the Italian consulate in downtown Cairo early Saturday, according to a statement from Renzi's office.

"Italy knows that terrorism is an enormous challenge that deeply marks history in our time," Renzi told Egyptian President Abdelfatah Al-Sisi by phone, the statement added.

"We will not leave Egypt alone: Italy and Egypt are and will always be together in the fight against terrorism," the Premier added.

For his part, Italian President Sergio Mattarella condemned the cowardly aggression which reveals the grave threat posed by terrorism.

Mattarella urged the European Union and the international community to launch urgent and effective initiatives to counter terrorism.

At least one person was killed and nine others wounded in the explosion outside the Italian consulate compound, a Ministry of Health spokesman said in Cairo.
