Libyan parties initial conciliation deal

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) Libyan parties have initialed a UN-proposed peace accord aimed at resolving their country's crisis that broke out in 2011.

Leaders of various political parties initially signed the deal in the Moroccan resort of Al-Skhirat, in Rabat's suburbs, under supervision of the UN envoy, Bernardino Leon, who stated during the signing ceremony that the agreement was worked out due to courage and determination of the diverse political forces.

The deal primarily aims at forming a national conciliation government.

He expressed confidence that the Libyan General National Congress would joint the deal to halt divisions in the country, which needs a robust national unity government, representing all parties across the political spectrum.

For his part, Moroccan Foreign Minister Salaeddine Mezouar affirmed his
country's unwavering commitment toward supporting the Libyan people in
their struggle for the country's independence.

The Moroccan resort has hosted the UN-sponsored conciliation talks among the Libyans since March 5, 2015.

Libya has been prevailed with power struggles, troubles and violence since
ouster of the late dictator, Col. Mohammar Gadhafi, in 2011. Currently, there are two parliaments and two governments, embroiled in a power struggle.

The deal was supported by the internationally-recognized parliament based in Tobruk. The Tripoli-based parliament, dominated by Islamic groups, has rejected the UN conciliation efforts.
