Parties trade blame for Delhi rain mess

(MENAFN- Gulf Times) The Bharatiya Janata Party, Congress and the Aam Aadmi Party indulged in a blame game yesterday as heavy rains inundated many places in the national capital, giving a harrowing time especially to commuters on main roads.

The BJP blamed the AAP-led Delhi government for water-logging at several places in the city.

It said yesterday's mess, caused due to choked sewer lines across the city, was the responsibility of the AAP government.

Delhi BJP spokesman Praveen Shanker Kapoor said the Delhi Jal Board was responsible for the choked sewer lines. "Cleaning all major drains lies with the Delhi Jal Board which falls under the Delhi government."
The Congress Party said the choked and overflowing drains, particularly in the unauthorised colonies, exposed the lies of the AAP government.
"Lack of co-ordination among the MCD (Municipal Corporation of Delhi), PWD (Public Works Department) and the flood department of the Delhi government is responsible for the present plight of the people of Delhi," said Delhi Congress spokeswoman Sharmistha Mukherjee.

The AAP, however, held the BJP-ruled municipal corporations responsible for the sad state of affairs in the city.
The heavy rains and water-logging left commuters helpless.
"I have been stuck on the Defence Colony flyover for more than an hour now. There is no respite. It's clearly visible that even the traffic police cannot do anything in such a situation apart from diverting the routes," Raman Batra, who works in a bank, said.

Meanwhile, the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has said the downpour will continue for two more days.
The rain spoiled a walkathon organised by the health ministry at India Gate to mark the World Population Day.

"There is heavy water-logging even on the railway tracks on the Badarpur-Prahladpur Road. No traffic police constable is in sight," Sunil Shah, a businessman, said.
People lashed out at the political class and the civic bodies for the mess.
"I am not blaming anyone but the ministers and MLAs who are demanding a salary hike, should once in a blue moon feel the misery of a common man," Shivi Bhatia, an IT professional, said.

According to the civic bodies, over 200 drains in the national capital were to be cleaned, which, however, was pending due to lack of funds.
Delhi received 93.8mm of rainfall till 8.30am yesterday, the IMD said. It has forecast more rainfall.
Yesterday's maximum temperature was 27.9 degrees Celsius.
