Capital basks in sunshine

(MENAFN- Gulf Times) London basked in glorious sunshine yesterday as temperatures soared across the south-eaast - but forecasters warned the glorious weather in unlikely to last.

Temperatures in the capital edged towards 24C as thousands made the most of the sunshine over the weekend.

Tennis fans including the likes of actor Rosamund Pike, US Vogue editor Anna Wintour and Downton Abbey star Dame Maggie Smith enjoyed fine summer weather during the women's final between Serena Williams and Garbine Muguruza at Wimbledon.
And thousands of sun worshippers headed to beaches such as Broadstairs in Kent and Brighton to make the most of the soaring temperatures as the UK's glorious summer continued. Temperatures in Essex reached 26C, the Met Office said.

But today's men's final, in which Roger Federer faces world number one Novak Djokovich, could be disrupted by showers due to arrive from the west over night.

Asked if the warm temperatures and sunshine would continue, Met Office forecaster Helen Roberts said: "'No' is the short answer.

"There's a weather system out to the west heading towards London, bringing thickening cloud during the later part of today.

"That front will bring outbreaks of rain into the morning, though it will perhaps be brighter in the afternoon, with a risk of short showers."

The outlook for next week also signals an end of the soaring temperatures of the past few weeks.

Roberts said: "Monday and Tuesday will be fairly cloudy with some rain, with brighter weather expected on Wednesday."

July got off to a scorching start as the capital - and much of the UK - basked in record temperatures.

The mercury hit 36.7C at Heathrow to make the first day of the month the hottest July day on record.
