British envoy citizens praise Jeddah's Ramadan traditions


(MENAFN- Arab News) JEDDAH: Mohammed Shokat the British consul general said that a number of British citizens were willing to visit the historic area of Jeddah and the second edition of the activities of the 'Ramadanna Kida' (Our Ramadan Is Like This) festival.
Shokat said the idea of organizing an exhibition of historical Ramadan activities which date back to old age was really laudable.
The CG considered the festival an integral part of the ancient coastal city which he said is distinguished due to its heritage and major historic civilizations.
During his visit which was his first to the festival Shokat learned about Saudi traditions. He said the focus on dress and social practices which is common in Ramadan highlights one of the most important periods of history of this ancient city. The envoy visited everywhere at the festival with his children and expressed surprise and pleasure. He said he saw the festival as if they experiencing the real ancient Jeddah.
The British consul general said that this initiative has great importance at the social level as it links the new generation of Saudis particularly the people of Jeddah with the priceless heritage of their forefathers who have played a most pivotal role to create the intricacies of the 'Bride of the Red Sea' Jeddah.
Many European residents are also visiting the 'Ramadanna Kida' festival. They find it a guide to the history of the old city of Jeddah before its walls were demolished and it was expanded in 1947.
