Ramadan festival helped 'cut crime rate'

(MENAFN- Arab News) JEDDAH: The Ramadan festival held recently in Jeddah's historic district has contributed to reduced crime levels a police official said recently.
This is because life has now returned to an area that was previously neglected and attracted criminals said Gen. Omar Sultan security commander for the festival.
Sultan said there is now greater security in the area thanks to the efforts of Jeddah Gov. Prince Mishaal bin Majed who had formed a joint task team consisting of the police security patrols and Civil Defense.
'The security situation in the district is much better and only minor incidents were registered. There was one of a man wearing women's clothing and some people selling fireworks who were all arrested' he said.
There are about 50 security officers in the area with more over the last 10 days of Ramadan.
The festival runs from 10 p.m. after Taraweeh prayers until 2 in the morning and has 50 cultural heritage and entertainment activities. There are 26 activities about Ramadan in Jeddah over the past 68 years at the Jeddah library Bashan Cultural House and the Museum of Zia Aziz Zia.
The organizers expect more than 1 million guests and visitors during the month of Ramadan.
