Turkey slams repatriation of Uyghurs from Thailand to China

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) The Turkish Foreign Ministry on Thursday strongly condemned as a flagrant violation of the international laws Thailand's decision to forcibly deport 115 Uyghur refugees to China.

The repatriation is in a stark contrast to the provisions of the 1951 UN Convention Relating to the Status of Refugees, and the 1984 Convention against Torture and Other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment, the ministry said in a press release.

To prevent forcible repatriation is a principle applicable not only to refugees but to any persons who face persecution or any risk to their life or safety, according to the statement.

The Ministry noted that it made several initiatives and contacted the Thai government and several international agencies concerned with the refugee affairs to prevent the repatriation but all to no avail.

It added that it will continue to monitor the situation and the fate of the deportees.

In a related development, Turkish protesters stormed the Thai consulate here earlier today and destroyed its withdows and furniture.

Uyghurs are a Muslim Turkish ethnic group in Eastern and Central Asia; they live primarily in the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region in China, where they are recognized as one of the country's 56 ethnic minorities. (end) ta.gb
