EU interior ministers discuss recent terrorist attacks


(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) The EU ministers of interior held an informal meeting in Luxembourg on Thursday, and amongst the topics discussed were the recent terrorist attacks in Kuwait, Tunisia and France, and cyberterrorism. "The challenges in relation to security cannot and must not be underestimated. We cannot exclude new threats or new terrorist attacks; unfortunately, this is the reality. What happened last month in France, Tunisia and Kuwait underlines the necessity to remain vigilant and determined," EU Commissioner for Home Affairs, Dimitrios Avramopoulosm told a press conference after the meeting.

He noted that European Commission will soon establish an internet forum that will bring together member states and internet service providers. "The aim is to reduce the accessibility of online terrorist material and to counter the terrorist narrative and propaganda," he added.

On his part, Etienne Schneider, Minister for Interior Security of Luxembourg, whose country holds the current EU Presidency, said representatives of EU counter-terrorism group presented to ministers how they are organized and how they operate.

The group is made up of the intelligence services of member states of the EU, he said and added that "for us it was important to illustrate the need for cooperation between these services and stress how important it is that the greatest possible use made of that forum in the fight against terrorism." Schneider added that "in our fight against terrorism, even if internal security is a matter of national responsibility, nonetheless the EU must give a united and strong response in total compliance with the principles of fundamental freedom and proportionality."
