(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) EU interior ministers discussed the issues of asylum and migrations at their informal meeting in Luxembourg Thursday evening.
Speaking at a press conference after the meeting, Jean Asselborn, Luxembourg Minister of Immigration and Asylum, said "we talked a lot about responsibility and solidarity, about how to share out this task of receiving a number of migrants." "There are two parts of this. First of all there is a resettlement of 20,000 people and the second part is relocation where there are 24,000 people in Italy to be relocated and 16,000 people to be relocated from Greece," he noted.
On his part, EU Commissioner for home affairs Dimitris Avramopoulos, said "We made progress especially on resettlement but we are not there yet." He said the EU is making available an extra sum of 50 million euro in this year and the year 2016 and we are expecting member states to make additional efforts to jointly relocate and resettle 60,000 people in clear need of international protection.
"Relocation and resettlement are part of a broader strategy of the EU to better manage migration in all aspects. Fighting migrant-smuggling, better identifying migrants and ensuring the return of those with no right to stay on EU territory are also among our top priorities," he added. (end)
