German posts record trade surplus as exports jump

(MENAFN- Saudi Press Agency) Germany posted a record trade surplus in May after a weaker euro helped to drive a surprise jump in exports, according to data released on Thursday, dpa reported.

Seasonally adjusted exports rose for the fourth consecutive month in
May, gaining 1.7 per cent after posting a 1.6-per-cent increase in
April, the statistics office (Destatis) said.

Analysts surveyed by dpa had expected a 0.8-per-cent drop in May
exports.

Monthly imports rose 0.4 per cent resulting in the trade surplus
widening to a record 22.8 billion euros (25.3 billion dollars).
Imports slumped 0.8 per cent in April.
