US, UAE officially open Sawab Center in Abu Dhabi

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) A US and UAE-funded counterterrorism institute officially opened on Wednesday in Abu Dhabi in the presence of senior officials from both countries, the US Department of State confirmed in a press release. The initiative is in support of the Global Coalition to Counter ISIL, and the launch was attended by US Under-Secretary of State for Public Diplomacy and Public Affairs Richard Stengel, as well as UAE Minister of State Anwar Gargash, the statement said. They carried the "support of the millions of people in the region and around the world that oppose Daesh (ISIL)," the statement noted. The Sawab Center - which means "the right path" in Arabic - "will use direct online engagement to counter terrorist propaganda rapidly and effectively, including messages used to recruit foreign fighters, fundraise for illicit activities, and intimidate and terrorize local populations," the statement said. The institute will also "increase the intensity of online debate by presenting moderate and tolerant voices from across the region and amplifying inclusive and constructive narratives," it added. "The Sawab Center will expand to welcome other partners in the 63 country Coalition and with people, organizations and businesses throughout the world to challenge Daesh's doctrines of hate and intolerance," the statement emphasized.

"The Center will also engage and expand the network of people willing to speak out against the terrorist group's propaganda, recruitment and fundraising efforts," it affirmed
