Arab League backs UN efforts for truce in Yemen


(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) Secretary-General of the Arab League Dr. Nabil Al-Arabi reaffirmed on Wednesday the League support to the efforts being made by UN Special Envoy for Yemen Ismail Ould Cheikh Ahmed to establish a humanitarian ceasefire.

Dr. Al-Arabi renewed his call for the warring parties in Yemen to respond positively to Cheikh Ahmed's efforts and alleviate the humanitarian suffering of the Yemenis during the holy month of Ramadan, according to press release by the League.

He has discussed, in a phone call with Cheikh Ahmed, the situation in Yemen and the prospects of a truce during Eid Al-Fitr holiday, due to start late next week, the statement added.

Separately, Dr. Al-Arabi delegated Ambassador Mohammad Monsef Amin, head of the League's mission in Juba, capital of South Sudan, to attend the celebrations marking country's independence day, due tomorrow, Thursday.
