Kuwait- Awqaf Schemes For Moderation


(MENAFN- Arab Times) The Ministry of Awqaf and Islamic Affairs is embarking on a multi-faceted strategy to promote religious moderation and counter extremism, the Minister Yaqoub Abdulmohsen Al-Sane announced Tuesday. In an open meeting with journalists organized by the Kuwaiti Journalists Association, Al-Sane, who doubles as a Minister of Justice, added that the strategy has clear-cut vision and values to promote.

The minister unveiled that he has made inroads in ridding the ministry of extremism. He clarified that the freedom of belief is guaranteed by the constitution, but the ministry takes actions against those who do not abide by the work instructions and rules. The ministry's Higher Committee of Moderation has set a strategy to spread moderation and fight terrorism and violence, Al-Sane said, urging all public and private organizations to help it fulfill its mission.

For his part, Undersecretary of the Ministry of Awqaf and Islamic Affairs for Administrative and Financial Affairs and Secretary General of the Higher Committee of Moderation, Fareed Emadi said that the countering extremism and promoting moderation is a top priority for the Ministry.

Following the recent terrorist attack on Al-Imam Al-Sadiq Mosque in Kuwait City which left 26 worshippers dead and 227 others injured, the Ministry developed two short-term and long-term plans to eradicate terrorism and extremism, Emadi said. He noted that the plans, which have been referred for the government for approval and execution, include several programs and initiatives to discourage youth from joining extremism groups and to educate the whole society about the values of moderation and the dangers of extremism.
