Oman- Authorities crack down on beggars

(MENAFN- Muscat Daily) The Ministry of Social Development (MoSD) and the ROP have intensified their crackdown against begging as incidents increase during Ramadan when beggars exploit the spirit of charity. To tackle this menace MoSD has deployed inspectors across the sultanate.

'The ministry is receiving their feedback and is in the process of compiling the data. Next week we will be able to share the data with the public' Abdullah al Talee head of the ministry's anti-begging squad told Muscat Daily. The ministry has activated a number (24794949) on which people can report begging.

'We are getting good response from the public' an officer with the anti-begging monitoring unit said. MoSD is using the social media to spread the word. Its messages say that giving alms does not make for charity and that begging is fraudsters' way to exploit the spirit of generosity. The ROP is coordinating with the ministry to prevent begging. It has issued public warnings which talk about children being used for begging and beggars targeting homemakers when they are alone in the house.

The ROP has said that beggars should not be entertained as some may knock on the door with the intention of stealing.
