Qatar- Brazil likely to seek more Middle East flights for Games

(MENAFN- Gulf Times) If more people from this region, including Qatar, show interest in visiting Brazil for the 2016 Rio Olympics, the South American nation may request top regional airlines to operate more flights on the sector.

Informing this yesterday, an official from the Brazilian external affairs ministry said though it was too early to speak about visas for Brazil-bound travellers, efforts were already under way to simplify the process.

Recalling that many travellers from the region flocked to Brazilian cities that hosted the 2014 FIFA World Cup, executive assistant to the Brazilian minister of external relations, Joel Sampaio, hoped there will be many more people from this region who may want to travel to his country for the Olympics.

New Metro services and advanced buses have already been launched in Rio de Janeiro as part of the preparations for the Games, which will be held in August 2016, he said.

As part of the preparations for the event, officials from Brazil are touring a number of countries across the world to make presentations on the ongoing infrastructure projects there.

Though it is the first time South America is hosting the football World Cup and Olympics within a span of just two years, overall this is the fourth such instance, he said, recalling similar occasions in Mexico (1968 Olympics and 1970 World Cup), the then West Germany (1972 Munich Olympics and 1974 World Cup) and the US (1994 World Cup and 1996 Atlanta Olympics).

While Sampaio has visited South Korea, Japan and China over the last fortnight to make presentations on the developments taking place as part of the Olympics, Doha is his first stop on the tour of GCC states.

Answering a query, the Brazilian embassy's first secretary, Fabio Meneghetti Chaves, said more than 300 residents from Qatar visited his country during the 2014 World Cup. "These days, more residents are showing interest in visiting Brazil as there is direct air connectivity between Doha and Sao Paulo," he stressed.
