Doha court reviews shoplifting case

(MENAFN- Gulf Times) A Doha Criminal Court is reviewing a case of a young man accused of shoplifting, local Arabic daily Arrayah has reported.
The defendant's lawyer has argued that his client suffers from kleptomania, which makes him lift items from shops regardless of his actual need or their value and it is hard for him to resist the urge.

The defendant, who is a university student, was arrested after he was repeatedly spotted taking small items from a shopping centre and leaving without paying. He continued to do so even after being warned by the management not to repeat the act. They then contacted the police and he was arrested.

It later came to light that the man had been accused in 11 similar cases earlier. While seven of these are still pending, he got jail terms in the other four, with one of them being a suspended sentence. He had already been jailed for three months for a similar theft and started stealing again shortly after his release.

His lawyer submitted a medical report on his condition and argued that the items he was accused or convicted of stealing were of no value to him. The lawyer accordingly requested that his client be referred to a specialised clinic for proper treatment, as giving him a prison term would only worsen his condition.
