Juma is Oman's lone entry at youth worlds

(MENAFN- Muscat Daily) Promising athlete Juma al Habsi will be Oman's sole entry at the IAAF World Youth Championships which will be held in Cali Colombia from July 15-19.

Juma will compete in two events at the meet - long jump and decathlon. The talented youngster had clinched medals in both the events at an Arab Youth meet that was held in Tunisia earlier this year.

Juma will be accompanied by his coach Omar al Rashdi on the trip to South America. Oman Athletics Association secretary general Jihad al Sheikh will also travel to Cali to attend a couple of IAAF meetings that will be held there on the sidelines of the championship.

The World Youth Championships is set to be the biggest international athletics event to be held on the South American continent with the Colombian city expected to welcome 1237 athletes from 154 countries.

Previously the largest IAAF track and field championships to be held in South America was the 2000 IAAF World Junior Championships in which 1122 athletes from 151 countries competed.

The championship is one of the leading events on the IAAF's international calendar providing a platform for the world's leading U18 athletes.

Cali is Colombia's second-biggest city and it is widely considered to be the country's sports hub having hosted a number of top competitions in the past most notably the 1971 Pan-American Games.

It will be the first time that there has been a South American host for the IAAF World Youth Championships which was inaugurated in 1999.
