Qatar- Criminal court clears man in drugs case

(MENAFN- Gulf Times) A Doha Criminal Court has acquitted a man of possessing illicit drugs for trade, local Arabic daily Arrayah reported yesterday.

He was earlier sentenced in absentia by a lower court to five years in jail and a fine of QR200,000. The first ruling was based on the testimony of the investigation officer who testified that the defendant was arrested for possessing the illicit drug hashish and other banned pills. However, the defendant did not attend any of the hearings of the lower court.

When the Criminal Court heard his plea, and called the officer for testimony, the latter said he had never seen the defendant, who was present at the court, before. Further, the officer said that he had not filed anything against him in the arrest report. So, the court cleared the man of the previous charges due to doubts over the conflicting testimony, the daily added.
