(MENAFN- The Peninsula) Panic spread among customers and workers at a shopping mall in the Industrial area after a huge fire broke out on Sunday night. The Mall of Asia, situated on street number 19 at the Industrial Area, caught fire around 11.30pm.
Around 100 people were inside the shopping mall at the time of the incident and all of them were evacuated safely. Emergency services were rushed to the site and the fire was brought under control by fire fighters only by yesterday morning due to heavy winds, the daily said. Shop owners complained of heavy damages. Due to Ramadan all the shops had stocks of huge quantity of goods and the damaged caused by the fire is estimated as QR 100,000, according to sources at the mall. The initial investigations by the Civil Defence found short circuit as the cause of the fire.
It is also reported that some nearby shops were also affected by the fire. The Mall of Asia, located at the heart of the Industrial Area, is a three-storey complex with a 90,000-square feet area and started three years ago.
