(MENAFN- The Journal Of Turkish Weekly) Russian President Vladimir Putin spoke to Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras on Monday following Greece's rejection of Europe's bailout proposals, the Kremlin said.
In a statement, the president's office said the telephone call was made "on Greece's initiative" and the leaders "discussed the results of the Greek referendum on international creditors' conditions for providing financial aid to Athens".
Spokesman Dmitry Peskov later said Greece did not request financial support from Russia.
He added: "We respect the will of the Greece nation. We hope our Greece partners agree with creditors as soon as possible."
Tsipras, who has been an outspoken critic of EU sanctions against Russia, met Putin last month at an economic forum in St Petersburg.
The phone call came a day after Greeks voted to reject austerity proposals from the European Commission, the European Central Bank and the International Monetary Fund.
