Oman- Temperatures soar as heatwave sweeps parts of sultanate

(MENAFN- Muscat Daily) A heatwave is sweeping across Oman causing temperatures to reach close to a searing 49°C in several places.

On Sunday Saham logged a blistering 48.8°C which was not far from the maximum recorded this year. The hottest day of the year till now was recorded on June 23 in Mudhaibi at 49.1°C.

The Sunday temperature in Khabourah was 48.6°C Liwa recorded 48.5°C Suwaiq was 48.4°C and Sohar 48.4°C. Muscat was just little lower at 47°C according to official figures.

On Monday too the temperature in Muscat hovered around 47°C. The same has been forecast for Tuesday.

The Directorate General of Meteorology has said that this heatwave is due to the desert winds or the northwesterly winds blowing across Oman. 'However we expect the temperatures to come down a little in the next few days' an official from the Met office told Muscat Daily.

While Ibri and Haima too recorded 47°C on Monday Saham and Sohar registered 45°C each but Suwaiq was much cooler at 38°C.

Saham resident Ahmed Saif al Saidi said the heat was taking its toll. 'The high temperatures are forcing us to stay indoors. Stepping out in such heat while fasting can prove to be risky' he said.

Arrangements for public iftars too are being hampered. 'Normally we put out chilled laban and juices much before time to avoid last-minute rush. The heatwave over the last two days is not allowing us this option' said M Ibrahim who helps arrange public iftars in Ruwi.

Incidentally Dhofar which is 15 days into khareef (the season officially began on June 21) reported receiving the year's first drizzle on Monday the Met official said. The weather there remains pleasant with cloudy to partly cloudy skies with chances of intermittent drizzle along the governorate's coast and adjoining mountains.

Giving a general forecast for rest of the sultanate the official said that coastal areas will experience light northerly to northeasterly winds which could become southwesterly and occasional fresh air at
