Greece's finance minister resigns after "no" vote

(MENAFN- Saudi Press Agency) Greece's Finance Minister Yanis Varoufakis said on Monday he is resigning, making the announcement in a tweet and on his personal webpage, dpa reported.

'The referendum of July 5 will stay in history as a unique moment when a small European nation rose up against debt-bondage,' he said on his webpage.

He said his decision came following the 'preference by some Eurogroup participants, and assorted 'partners,' for my ... 'absence' from its meetings.'

Varoufakis added that Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras judged this decision 'to be potentially helpful to him in reaching an agreement.'

The announcement came hours after the ballot count of the referendum on Greece's bailout package was completed.

The 'no' vote got 61.31 per cent of the vote, while 'yes' got 38.69 per cent, according to the Interior Ministry in Athens. The turnout was 62.5 per cent.

Varoufakis' resignation is being seen as sign of Athens' willingness to resume negotiations with a clean slate. After the resounding 'no' vote, Tsipras said his government will continue its effort to reach an agreement.
