Dhaka Questioning 12 Qaeda Suspects

(MENAFN- Arab Times) A Bangladesh court on Friday gave police three days to question 12 suspected members of al-Qaeda's branch in the Indian subcontinent after their arrests in raids this week. Police can request an extension if they need more time to interrogate them. Mohammed Jalaluddin, who is in charge of investigating the case, said there was no lawyer present Friday to seek bail for the suspects. A spokesman for the elite anticrime force Rapid Action Battalion, Maksudul Alam, said the suspects include the alleged head of the group in Bangladesh.

He said they were arrested in raids starting Wednesday. Cmdr. Mufti Mahmud Khan, another spokesman for the anticrime agency, told reporters that officers "seized explosives, bombmaking materials, knives and books on jihad" from some of the suspects. Khan said the suspects were planning a jail break to free the group's leader, who is behind bars in a separate case. In May, al-Qaeda's Indian subcontinent branch claimed responsibility for the murders of two secular bloggers, including a Bangladeshi- American, who were critical of Islamic fundamentalism.
