Debut Gulf forum to focus on growing demand for metrology
(MENAFN- Gulf Times) Global reports have revealed a projected increase in the demand for metrology services in the automotive, electronics, and energy sectors, among others, the Gulf Organisation for Industrial Consulting (Goic) said.
Goic said the forecast was the basis for the staging of the 1st Gulf Metrology Forum slated on December 14 and 15 in Doha under the patronage of the HE the Minister of Environment Ahmad Amer al-Humadi.
The main objectives of the forum include the exchange of ideas to raise awareness and compliance with industrial standards, assessment of the requirements of Gulf industries and institutions in the area of metrology, and examining means of increasing national capacities in the field of industrial standards.
The forum, according to Goic, aims to attract new metrology activities, areas, and international best practices to reinforce metrology infrastructure as part of quality development in member states.
It also explores the role of national metrology institutes and laboratories, the experiences of member states in supporting metrology activities and local laboratories, means to co-operate with international laboratories, and to gather applicable recommendations from participants to support metrology activities in GCC (Gulf Cooperation Council) countries.
Goic said the significant technical aspects of the forum include raising awareness on the importance of metrology and its scientific, industrial, and legal aspects; presenting experiences of GCC countries; co-operating with international institutions to develop and support the role of metrology; communicating with concerned GCC parties in the field of metrology; and learning the cognitive and procedural environment in GCC countries to include legal frameworks, researches, and applications.
The forum targets government and private laboratories, relevant institutions and companies, ministries of commerce, industry, and environment, and industrial companies operating in the fields of oil, gas, energy, petrochemicals, metallurgy, in addition to universities, scientific research institutions, and global organisations specialising in metrology and calibration.
To prepare for the event, Goic held a meeting attended by Goic assistant general secretary for industrial projects sector Dr Ali Hamed al-Mulla; assistant undersecretary for laboratories and standardisation Dr Mohamed bin Saif al-Kuwari; Central Laboratories Department director Salah Salem al-Rumaihi, and calibration of metrology laboratories expert and consultant Ahmed Burhan al-Hashemi.
Other participants include, Central Laboratories Department's head of Building and Roads Materials Department Naima Hussein al-Doql; Walid al-Yafei of the Public Relations Department, metrology director Omar Kanakrieh, and metrology researcher Abdulilah Qarnas al-Qarnas.
During the meeting, the participants stressed the importance of metrology and its relevance to daily life, as well as its role as a key pillar of manufacturing in developing countries and a main part of the industrial development cycle.
The event is being organised by Goic, GCC Standardisation Organisation (GSO), and GulfMet. For more information, contact project director Hazim al-Anqar at +974 4495 9727 or alanqar@goic.org.qa.
