Qatar- QU team competes in World University Summer Games 2015


(MENAFN- Gulf Times) A team of 17 students from Qatar University (QU) has competed in the World University Summer Games 2015 (Summer Universiade), which is being held in Gwangju, South Korea, until July 14.

The team members have participated in six events - lawn tennis, table tennis, fencing, shooting, athletics and swimming - at the event, which has drawn 14,000 participants from 150 countries, including seven from the Arab region.

QU tennis team members Ahmed al-Sayegh and Ali Abed al-Rida went through to the second round in the Men's Singles category while Ali Abed al-Rida and Jaber al-Marri went through to the second round in the Men's Doubles category.

QU associate V-P for student life and services Abdulla al-Shandoor al-Yafei was among the more than 40,000 attendees from around the world at the July 3 opening ceremony, which included Korean President Park Geun-hye, International University Sports Federation president Claude-Louis Gallien, Universiade Organising Committee co-president Kim Hwang-sik and US ambassador to Korea Mark Lippert.

Commenting on the event, al-Yafei said: "Providing our students with opportunities to compete on the world stage at such high-profile university competitions shows QU's commitment to enriching students' university experience in which they can

unlock their potential and talents and develop into individuals who will become the next leaders."

Swim team member Abdulaziz Ali said, "This was a very valuable opportunity for us to strengthen links with our counterparts from different countries."
