UK- Student who killed youth jailed for life

(MENAFN- Gulf Times) A student from Tottenham has been jailed for life for the murder of a "friendly and caring" south London man.

Tajwar Alam, 19, of Seaford Road, stabbed Hassan Mohamed in a vicious attack on York Road, Southend, on July 7.

The 24-year-old, from Camberwell, had been visiting friends in the Essex town when he was set upon and knifed two times. He died in hospital the following morning.

In a statement released at the time, his family said: "Hassan was a very friendly, caring person.

"He grew from a boy into a man and was a protector and best friend to his family.

"He was loved by all but especially by his two nieces who adored their Uncle Hass immensely.

"We pray that justice is served and that he soon will be able to rest in peace."

Alam had denied murder but been convicted by a majority verdict at an earlier date.

On Friday at Chelmsford Crown Court, he was told he would spend 20 years in prison before being considered for parole.

DCI Simon Werrett, of the Kent and Essex Serious Crime Directorate, said: "The judge described him as a callous young man with a tendency to violence.

"The sentence handed down today will ensure the people of Southend are safe from Alam and hopefully give Hassan's family some closure so they can move on with their lives, although nothing will bring their son back."

Police are hunting for a man who is alleged to have sexually assaulted a 12-year-old girl as she walked through a busy London rail station with her family.

The "intoxicated" attacker assaulted the schoolgirl from behind as she walked through Liverpool Street station with her mother and brother, police said.

When he realised what had happened, the girl's brother confronted the man, who then stroked the boy's face.

The children's mother tried to stop the man from escaping but he ran away towards the station's Bishopsgate exit.

Detectives at city police today released a CCTV picture of a man they want to question over the incident.

They said the girl had been left "traumatised" by the attack, which happened between 9.10pm and 9.25pm on Friday.

Acting detective inspector Anne Medlycott, who is leading the investigation, said: "The girl has been traumatised by this attack that took place in front of her mother and brother.

"Did you see this man drinking in bars in the area before the attack?

"We need to identify this man in order to protect the public."

Police described their suspect as white and aged between 20 and 30. He was about 5'7"with short auburn hair and a short beard. He was wearing a white shirt with black trousers.

Five patients at an east London mental health unit were arrested this morning on suspicion of falsely imprisoning staff.

Police raided the John Howard Centre in Homerton at about 12.15am after reports there was a "serious disturbance" at the medium-secure facility.

Officers from Hackney and the Met's taser-equipped Territorial Support Group safely led staff out of the building a quarter of an hour later and arrested five men at 1am on suspicion of violent disorder and false imprisonment.

They are now in custody at police stations across east London, a Scotland Yard spokesman said.

"Overnight, police attended a serious disturbance at the John Howard Centre, E9," police tweeted this morning.

"Officers arrested five people for violent disorder and assisted staff in returning the centre to normal to minimise the impact on other patients."

A man was left seriously injured after being attacked in broad daylight on a north London street yesterday.

The victim, believed to be aged in his 50s, was hit over the head as he walked along Philip Lane in Tottenham just after 8.20am.

Paramedics were called and he was taken to an east London hospital to be treated for head injuries.

A spokesman for Scotland Yard said his condition was "not life-threatening".

One man was being held in custody this afternoon in connection with the incident after he was arrested on suspicion of causing grievous bodily harm.

Police cordoned off part of the road while they investigated at the scene.

Buses in the area were temporarily on diversion but have since returned to their normal routes, Transport for London said.

In a statement, Scotland Yard said: "Police were called at approximately 8:20am on to reports of a man assaulted in Philip Lane, Seven Sisters.

"Officers and London Ambulance Service attended and the man, believed aged in his 50s, was taken to an east London hospital for treatment to a head injury. His condition is not life threatening.

"One man has been arrested on suspicion of GBH and remains in custody at a north London police station. A cordon remains in place around the scene.
