US Navy closes DC base following false gunshots alarm

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) The US Navy Yard in Washington DC closed its base for hours Thursday after receiving a false alarm call on gunshots inside a building at the base.

The all clear was given at the Washington Navy yard after an earlier call was placed from a building inside the yard to report possible gun shots, Vice Adm. Dixon Smith, commander, Navy Instillations Command, said in a joint press conference at the Navy Yard, adding that Navy Yard officials called partner law enforcement agencies for assistance.

NCIS agents and other law enforcement have completed their inspection of the Humphreys Building (Bldg. 197), Smith said, adding that all personnel are safe and accounted for and there are no signs of a shooting, a shooter, or victims.

"All our commands practice active-shooter drills...no doubt in my mind that made a difference this morning," he said, noting that the Washington Navy Yard and law enforcement agencies have trained to respond to this type of situation.

This resulted in an organized search of the facilities by first responders, he added.
