UN condemns attack on its mission site in South Sudan

(MENAFN- Jordan News Agency) United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon on Wednesday condemned an attack on a UN Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) in Malakal by opposition forces, which killed one Internally Displaced Person (IDP) and injured six others.

Ki-moon said in a statement that "The secretary-general calls on former Vice President Riek Machar and Johnson Olony, commander of opposition forces, to conduct an immediate investigation into this incident and hold to account those responsible".

He called on the parties to respect the UNMISS sites, including protection of civilian sites, which are now host to more than 140,000 IDPs.

The UN envoy reiterated that "there is no military solution to the conflict in South Sudan" and called on all parties to immediately cease the hostilities and make the necessary compromises to urgently conclude the negotiations facilitated by the Inter-Governmental Authority on Development (IGAD)."
