Oman's Optimist team to train in Greece

(MENAFN- Muscat Daily) Eight sailors from the national Optimist team left for Nea Makri on the east coast of Athens in Greece for a two-week training camp until July 15.

The sailors will train at a local sailing club where the windy and warm conditions will provide the perfect preparation for the World Optimist Championships which is scheduled to take place in Poland in August. The five best performing youth sailors will be then selected for the worlds while six sailors will compete in the IODA Optimist African Championship in Algeria in September and the Optimist Asia and Oceania Championship in Doha Qatar in October.

Rashid al Kindi Oman Sail's national youth team manager said 'We are aiming for a strong performance in the summer events where there are plenty of medals to be won. The training camps will provide a vital opportunity for the Optimist squad to experience new conditions and prepare for the worlds.'

Kindi added 'The camps are not just about sailing they offer a great opportunity to work on fitness boat-handling team tactics and gauge overall progress to give the sailors the ideal preparation ahead of the events.'

Following the training camp in Greece the sailors will take part in a training stint in Sur from August 5-10 ahead of the second National Optimist Championships.

Meanwhile the Laser 4.7 sailors will take part in a training camp in Musannah this month ahead of the world championships in Medemblik The Netherlands in August.
