Market Report "Romania Power Report Q3 2015" published

(MENAFNEditorial)

We maintain our view that n uclear power will be key to driving Romania's energy sector given the p rospect of massive Chinese and Canadian investment in the second half of the decade. Gas will also play an important role with our O&G analysts forecast ing Romania to become a net gas exporter from 2020 onwards . This will fuel an increase in gas-power electricity generation which according to our forecasts will reach 11TWh in 2024 compared to 8 . 02 TWh in 2014. Finally we expect the government to remain committed to privatis ing the power sector increasing the potential for market-driven competition.

 Key Trends And Developments

 *  A new government strategy for 2015-25 highlights the increasingly decrepit state of much of Romania's electricity infrastructure. According to the report many of the country's electric energy production capacities have gone beyond the technical life and are becoming wasteful and polluting. According to the government the Oltenia and Hunedoara complex energy units are now on the brink of bankruptcy.
 *  As a result of rising production exports of electricity surged n 2014. In February 2015 Romania signed an agreement with Turkey which establishes a consortium to develop a submarine power cable transmission line to Turkey laying the basis for increased exports in future.
 *  In January 2015 new regulations came into force which allow only energy traders who possess a license issued by Romania's energy regulation agency ANRE to import or export electricity. Under the new rules energy suppliers can sell energy only to the final customers while the traders can buy and sell energy on the central market or for export or import. The new law also prohibits energy producers to import or export energy.
 *  Hidroelectrica's performance continues to improve after a difficult few years. it recorded a gross profit of RON405mn (EUR91.8mn) in Q115 more than twice the gross profit reported in 2014 when...
